Service Description: Soil Organic Carbon was computed for a 100cm soil depth (units are g C per square meter) using methods previously published (Bliss, Waltman, and Petersen, 1995 Preparing a Soil Carbon Inventory of the U.S. Using GIS In. Soils and Global Change, Advances in Soil Science, CRC-Lewis Publishers Boca Raton., pp. 275-295; Bliss, Waltman, and Ping. 2002. Eos Transactions American Geophysical Unit, 83, 47, F0743) using a 12/30/2009 snapshot of the Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) for the Conterminous U.S. (Rapic Carbon Assessment or RaCA Project). For mapping purposes, the vector SSURGO map layer was gridded to a 10 m resolution in an Albers Equal Area projection for individual States. This gridded vector was called the R&D gridded SSURGO dataset or gSSURGO. SSURGO a digital soil survey and generally is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizing maps, by compiling information.
