Service Description: County weighted average Soil Organic Carbon for 100 cm depth (gC/m2) computed by area weighting 2018 gSSURGO SOC 30cm depth values to determine a county-wide average. Soil Organic Carbon was computed for a 30cm soil depth (units are g C per square meter) using the methods previously published (Bliss, Waltman, and Petersen, 1995 Preparing a Soil Carbon Inventory of the U.S. Using GIS In. Soils and Global Change, Advances in Soil Science, CRC-Lewis Publishers Boca Raton., pp. 275-295; Bliss, Waltman, and Ping. 2002. Eos Transactions American Geophysical Unit, 83, 47, F0743) using a 12/30/2009 snapshot of the Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) for the Conterminous U.S. For mapping purposes, the vector SSURGO map layer was gridded to a 10 m resolution in an Albers Equal Area projection for individual States. This gridded vector was called the R&D gridded SSURGO dataset or gSSURGO.
